Worst Elk hunting experience of my life. Would not recommend this so called outfitter to anyone. Had such a bad experience I will most likely never hunt Wy again. Nothing more than a guided horse back ride.

  2. I have to say that this was my worst hunting trip I have ever experienced. Spent more time on horses trying to spook up or bust out the game. Very little game to be seen and a great many other outfitters/horses in the same area we were hunting…but they say they have exclusive rights? Never got a contract or invoice prior to arriving. Was told all prices were inclusive then they asked me for taxes/fees. The entire high camp got extremely sick and they were ‘ill’ prepared and offered nothing to make up for two days of lost guides. Last day of the “hunt” was actually packing out and hunting on the way back down to base camp. Food was great! Nice bed space and fire stoves in tents. Fresh water and clean urninals were available. Friendly people at camp and friendly staff. I just believe the wildlife has left the area and DD are unable to cope with the invasion of other camps/hunters.

Would not recommend this outfitter for the serious hunter, as their main focus never appeared to be on the hunt but dealing with daily problems. These problems included horses and food. We never started on time in the morning. Between four hunters and five hunting days only saw one bull. Would not call Double Y an outfitter. Just a below average hunting guide.

I just found these comments today about double Y. I have the 3rd week of September
Booked with a tag in hand. Please give me some more feedback if possible. I was hoping
For a once in a lifetime trip. First elk hunt. Any suggestions or outfitters in that area to check out?

I just got done with a hunt with Double Y Outfitters and have to say that just about every single poor review I have read is inaccurate. Two friends and myself thoroughly enjoyed our experience and we saw elk every day except for the one day when the weather was so bad we could not hunt due to heavy snow that accumulated to the point of 1′ at high camp and almost 2′ on the ridges. We did hunt the next day and did see elk. We had 6 bulls within 50 yards, 4 within 20 in 5 days of hunting. My other friend and the gentlemen he was paired with also saw elk while glassing but were not involved in nearly as strenuous a hunt as If you think that going on a wilderness hunt in Wyoming is going to to be anything like going to ranch and just strolling through the woods with elk showing up you’ll be disappointed on any wilderness hunt. Do yourself a favor and get in shape, and I don’t mean just walking a couple miles without being out of breath, I mean in shape. The altitude and the terrain are going to push you to a point you didn’t know was possible.

We rode long and hard, we hiked longer and harder and were rewarded with an experience that my friends and myself will never forget and we plan on returning and hunting with Eli and Double Y Outfitters again. There is nothing like pushing yourself to the absolute limit of your endurance and having a 6x bugle at 18 yards, whether you get a shot opportunity or not.

I just returned from a 7 day hunt with Double Y. I have to say the experience was not at all what I hoped for. The guide had considerable trouble finding Elk. On the two occasions he did find elk he never wanted to move on them to try for a shot. The food was good and tents were goodand horses seemed fine. I just would have rather had a guide who wanted to hunt and not horse back ride. I expressed my concerns towards the end of the hunt to the owner but nothing changed. It seemed if you were a repete customer they took much more interest in you as a hunter.

I have been meaning to post on this site since our hunt with Double Y in September. I posted further up this thread about concerns we had when i found these reviews. We archery hunted the 3rd week in September.
Be prepared to spend a lot of time on a horse. This is the only way you can get to high camp and to where you will hunt. Make sure you are in great shape. The food was great and tents gave us a nice place to sleep.
Our guide was new but worked his butt off to make sure everything with the horses was handled. We heard buggles everyday. The 2nd day we got fairly close to a bull and few cows but couldnt get them in bow range. The last day we decided to hunt a moutain side that we saw bulls on everyday. It was very tough terrain climbing this mountain but the guide kept pushing us to keep climbing. The guide set up and started calling. We had 4 bulls buggling working there way down towards the call. Both my buddy and myself were able to get a shot off on 2 5×5′s within 20yds. Poor arrow placment caused us to lose the bulls. I would without a doubt book another hunt with DoubleY. Just need to save a little cash to go back in a year or 2. What we do is called hunting! If you work hard and get where the bulls bed you will get a shot with a bow. Eli and his crew do there best to put you on some animals.
