Understanding Michigan’s New Mentored Youth Hunting Program

Michigan Mentored Youth Hunting Program

On March 1st Michigan started selling hunting licenses to children of any age. The new Mentored Youth Hunting Program finally allows adults to extend the parenting of their children into the woods! The hunting program is designed to keep kids active and interested in the outdoors. Under this program, a hunting mentor can purchase a child five different hunting licenses for $7.50. This means a child 9 years and under can shoot two turkeys, two deer, and small game hunt. These licenses are bought over the counter and do not require the child … [Read more...]

Bull moose who works like a horse

Bull moose pulling logs

Do we believe it or can I find proof the bull moose article is a myth? The quote in bold that came in my email today. And, if you thought folks in Northern Michigan did things "differently", check out the following: Only in Nordern Minnesnowta! ....... This guy raised an abandoned moose calf with his Horses, and believe it or not, he has trained it for lumber removal and other hauling tasks. Given the 2,000 pounds of robust muscle, and the splayed, grippy hooves, he claims it is the best work animal he has. He says the secret to … [Read more...]

Record Northern Pike – Part 2

Last month I blogged about a Record Book Michigan Northern Pike. Since the story there has been a bunch of others that have surfaced as well as some interesting statements on the area the huge Northern Pike was supposedly caught. If you recall it was stated the Bass Lake, Iosco County, Hale was the origin to where not only caught a huge northern pike but, if true, would have been the world record. Details I have received from people from the area: The lake is only 30-40 acres big. Having pike in it but not of that size. The area has pike … [Read more...]

Moon Phase Matters

Hunting the Moon Phase does Matter This past hunting season I decided to take my first out of state deer hunting trip. In planning the trip the main factors I looked at was the rut, moon phase, hunting outfitter, and past harvest season. With my hunting buddy being a farmer we had to make sure he got his corn chopped and combined before winter. This was the starting factor, leaving the rut and outfitter as the next two prioirty's. We found a great Missouri Outfitter that had openings and was reasonably priced. The rut was estimated to be some … [Read more...]

New Nebraska State Record Deer: Is it Fact or Fiction or a Half-Truth?

Nebraska State Record 38 point Whitetail

The latest pictures have surfaced. I received these two pictures with a short story of a game warden who witnessed this deer. His claim is that the deer was shot in Nebraska by a 20 something year old. The estimate was it was a 38 point and is the potential Nebraska state record whitetail deer. I have went to google and did some searches with no success. I am now starting the waiting game to see if I receive more picture/stories of Who, what, where, and when this deer was killed. The only facts are (if you believe the pictures) the … [Read more...]

Monster Whitetail Deer vs Coyotes: Is it Fact or Fiction or a Half-Truth?

As usual, the hunting season has brought another email of pictures to be questioned.   In this case it is a set of pictures of a story that can be truth, fiction or somewhere in between. The story sounded crazy at first and then I received it again from another source and yet another story emerged. Finally as I write this blog post there is a third email with yet another variation of the pictures. I love to see and read about these events.  They can be recited again and again and somewhere along that trail, the story branches off emerging … [Read more...]

Are You a Future Taxidermist?

Old Taxidermist

In general terms, a taxidermist is a professional who mounts dead animals for the purpose of public display, such as in a museum or monument, or for other sources of scientific study. For hunters, we use a taxidermist for animals we’ve killed so we can proudly display them in our homes, cabins, lodges, garages, or mancaves. While we typically think of hunting when hearing the word taxidermy, the term itself goes as far back as the 18th century when sea explorers returned home from voyages and hunting expeditions. A Day in the Life of a … [Read more...]

To Shoot or Not to Shoot

Me and My Missouri Buck

This year I finally had a chance to go hunting in a state other than my home state of Michigan. We decided on a hunting trip in Missouri, which is a state know for having some very nice deer. My Michigan hunting experiences have never presented opportunities for hunting big deer in their natural environment, so I was excited for the chance to hunt in Missouri. The Problem With Hunting in Michigan For much of my life we’ve either hunted in Northern Michigan, which is known for having lots of deer but not many with large racks, or Southern … [Read more...]

Monster Whitetail Deer: Is it Fact or Fiction or a Half-Truth?

Monster Whitetail Deer Hit in Michigan on M59

I have received this picture multiple times and from multiple sources.  It is of a monster whitetail buck that is lying dead with the legs of two people in the picture.  As in many hunting stories, the account of what actually happened to this animal varies.  This image (and the accompanied stories) has had, to date, three things that were similar.  One piece of information was fact, and the additional points could be construed as a half-truth, fiction, or fact.  The one undeniable fact of this picture, unless it is edited, is that it is a … [Read more...]
